The English Language Arts Department is committed to the presentation of materials and skills acquisition that will enable students to develop:

  • Reading skills
  • Writing skills
  • Grammar, spelling, and vocabulary
  • Oral language and reasoning
  • Research skills

In addition, these guiding principles of the English Language Arts curriculum is to enable students with the tools to:

  • Demonstrate independence.
  • Build strong content knowledge.
  • Respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline.
  • Comprehend & critique.
  • Value evidence.
  • Use technology and digital media strategically and capably.
  • Understand other perspectives and cultures.

ELA Curriculum Overview

At the elementary level, students will engage in a variety of literacy skills as they learn to read, write and communicate. Through engaging in appropriate and diverse stories, texts, and poems, students will develop literacy skills while learning about their surrounding world.
